Greater Rochester, NY- Two Division III schools have facilities that have finished in the money in the annual Kraft Hockeyville competition, according to a release issued recently by Kraft Foods and the National Hockey League. The list of ten finalists included a pair of Division III rinks in the greater Rochester area of New York, as Geneseo's Ira Wilson Arena and Nazareth's Bill Gray's Iceplex were among those that made the cut.
Of those two, Geneseo's Ira Wilson Arena is now the winner of at least $25,000 as a prize for advancing to the four team second round. The Ira is a 2,500 capacity rink that is home to the Geneseo men's ice hockey team and also to Geneseo Finger Lakes Youth Hockey, which uses more than 30 hours of ice time weekly.
The Bill Gray's Iceplex is a multiple pad facility on the campus of Monroe Community College in Rochester, and serves as a hub of youth and junior hockey in addition to hosting the Golden Flyers. Nazareth's home ice will receive $10,000 for upgrades for making the list of ten finalists, but did not advance.
Further advancement in the competition will yield either $75,000 for the runner-up, and $150,000 and the opportunity to host an NHL preseason game for the winner.
The contest continues in stages through April 25th. Over 1,300 rinks were nominated for this year's edition.
