Venditti tapped to lead UNE women

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England has announced that David Venditti will be its next head women's ice hockey coach. Venditti replaces Erin Hamlen, who resigned in June to become the head coach at Merrimack College.  The Nor'easters played as an independent last season, the program's first, and finished with a 1-10 mark.

Venditti's Division III experience includes a combined 13 years at Colby and Southern Maine.

Venditti has 13 years of collegiate head coaching experience, including the last nine years at Colby College. Prior to his stint at Colby, Venditti led the women's program at the University of Southern Maine. While Venditti was at Colby, the Mules qualified for postseason play eight of his nine seasons, including an appearance in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) championship game in 2008. Southern Maine achieved national ranking under Venditti's direction while making it to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East semifinals four times and averaging 15 victories a season. His teams have won a total of 146 games over his collegiate career.

Venditti graduated from Southern Maine in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in economics. He played four seasons for the Huskies.

Prior to breaking into the collegiate coaching ranks, Venditti served as the boys' varsity coach at Cheverus High School. He currently serves as director of the Girls' Hockey Academy in Portland and is director of Girls' Player Development for New England.

UNE Director of Athletics Kim Allen is excited to add Venditti to the Nor'easters' coaching staff.

"David possesses a tremendous amount of passion for ice hockey and has strong organizational skills," Allen said. "He fully embraces the NCAA Division III philosophy and is committed to providing our student-athletes the best possible experience. As we make the transition to the ECAC Women's East in 2014-15, we feel David is well-suited to elevate our program into regional prominence and beyond."

Venditti is eager to begin the next stage of his coaching career.

"I would like to thank UNE for giving me such a great opportunity to lead a program that is positioned for success," commented Venditti. "The infrastructure in place at UNE shows a commitment from the administration to accomplish great things, and I am excited to lead this program forward in a manner members of the UNE community and fans will be proud of."
