River Falls salvages 2-2 tie with Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Falcon men's hockey team battled to a 2-2 overtime tie at UW-Superior on Friday night.

UWRF scored the game-tying goal in the closing minutes of the back-and-forth game to salvage one point.

UWS's Marc Fortin scored the only goal of the first period at 15:17 to give his team the lead. UWS had a 12-9 advantage in shots. Jake Calleja and Adam Cardwell led the Falcons with two each. There was just one penalty in the period and the Falcons killed of the Superior power play opportunity.

UWRF tied the game, 1-1, at 12:28 of the second period when Willie Hess scored his ninth goal of the year with assists to John Schreiner and Cardwell. With just 1:30 to play in the period the Jackets scored to take a 2-1 lead after two. Joey Massingham netted the goal to give his team the advantage. UWRF had a 7-5 advantage in shots in the period. Once again the Falcons had the only penalty of the period, but were able to kill it off.

With just 3:56 to play in the final period the Falcons tied the game off a goal by Cardwell. He was assisted by Hess andCaleb Wolfgram. It was Cardwell's team-best 14th goal of the year. The Falcons finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots in the period. The Falcons had two power-play opportutnies in the period but did not score on either try.

In the five-minute extra session the UWS had a 4-1 advantage in shots. For the game the Jackets outshot the Falcons by one, 28-27. Both teams finished with two minor penalties and were 0-2 on the power-play.

Falcon goalie Scott Lewan stopped 26 shots and UWS goalie, Drew Strandberg stopped 25 Falcon shots. Lewan is now 11-9-4 overall.

UWRF, now 11-9-4 overall and 4-9-4 in the NCHA, will end its regular season on Saturday night when they play at St. Scholastica. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
