Lakers Never Give Up Early Lead in Win Over Canton

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The No. 9 Oswego State men's ice hockey team defeated SUNY Canton, 3-2, at the Marano Campus Center Arena on Saturday night. With the victory, the Lakers improve to 3-1 this season, while the Kangaroos fall to 1-3.

Oswego took the lead just under 13 minutes into the first period, never giving it up for the rest of the game. Taking advantage of the power-play, Josh Zizek slapped the puck from the right side of the net past the Canton goalie's outstretched arm to put the Lakers on the scoreboard. The goal was Zizek's team-leading fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Tyson Bruce and freshman Max Novick each collected an assist off of Zizek's goal.

With 5:52 left in the second period, the Lakers extended their lead. AJ D'Orazio took a straight-on shot during the power-play, sending the puck through traffic into the Canton net for the Lakers' second goal. Tyler Currie notched his first assist of the season off of the goal, while Mitch Herlihey notched his second.

When Canton responded with a goal, Oswego answered with another one of its own. While the Canton goalie was leaning towards the right side of the net, assistant captain Cameron Berry knocked the puck in from the left side to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead over the Roos. Sophomores Joseph Molinaro and Jody Sullivan assisted on Berry's goal.

Goalie Cedric Hansen, starting in the net for the second time this season, played all 60 minutes for the Lakers. The sophomore made 20 saves during the game.

The Lakers return to the ice at 7 p.m. on Friday when they host Buffalo State for Pride Night.
