O'Grady tabbed to lead women's ice hockey program

DUDLEY, Mass. – Nichols College Director of Athletics Chris Colvin has named Mike O'Grady head coach of the women's ice hockey program.

O'Grady comes to Nichols after spending the 2016-17 season as an assistant women's ice hockey coach at the University of Maine, a member of Hockey East. While in Orono, O'Grady designed and implemented on-ice position specific skill development for all student-athletes, managed the defense during games, recruited potential student-athletes, and coordinated all aspects om team travel.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to join Nichols College," said O'Grady. "I would like to thank Chris Colvin and the Nichols administration for having faith in me to lead the women's hockey program. I will meet with the current players soon to lay out the plan for the summer and will continue to build our recruiting class of 2017."

Prior to his arrival at Maine, O'Grady spent two seasons at Mercyhurst University, where he served as the assistant coach with the women's ice hockey program while concurrently serving as a graduate assistant for the Mercyhurst Archeoological institute. O'Grady was responsible for strength and conditioning, goaltender development, daily practice planning, game day decisions, in-game video, and coordination of the team's meals, travel arrangements, and marketing.

"I am excited to welcome Mike into the Nichols College family," said Colvin. "Mike brings experience from two Division I women's hockey programs and a passion to lead the Nichols program to success. His philosophy of coaching, recruiting, and creating a family culture mirrors that of Nichols College and I am excited to see the growth that the program will undertake under Mike's leadership."

From 2011-15, O'Grady worked for the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) as an Intern for National Events. There, he assisted the AHCA Executive Director in event planning, protocol, and daily operations, as well as the AHCA Board during the M1 National Tournament and coaches' convention.

O'Grady cut his teeth in coaching at his alma mater, John Carroll University, where he was an assistant hockey coach for three seasons (2011-14) for its AHCA program. He was in charge of recruiting, equipment, positional development, video, talent evaluating, and team travel. Additionally, O'Grady served as the Head of Marketing and Community Outreach, where he focused on fundraiser, social justice, special event, and donation management. In 2011-12, O'Grady helped the team reach the AHCA D1 National Tournament for the first time in program history. During that same time (2012-14), he worked for the Cleveland Hockey Alliance as a Summer Hockey Academy Director, Learn-to-Play Director, and a goaltender coach.

O'Grady holds a USA Hockey Level 4 Coaches Certification and is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He performed an internship during his senior year at John Carroll with the strength and conditioning coach, where he helped implement programs for several of the college's programs., including women's soccer and volleyball.

O'Grady earned his Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Exercise Science in May, 2014 and is on track to receive his Master's Degree in Organizational Leadership from Mercyhurst next month.
