BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England converted all three of its power-play opportunities to defeat Nichols College by a 3-1 spread in women's ice hockey action on Friday night (Jan. 12) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Shannon Nadeau got the scoring started with five minutes left in the 1st period, stepping into a long rebound on the weak side after shots by Marykate Drinkwater and Annie Mullen.

It remained 1-0 into the 3rd, before Katie Babineau finished a rebound through a screen with 7:02 on the clock to set the Nor'easters ahead, 2-0. Drinkwater and Nadeau assisted on the play for their second points of the evening.

The Bison pulled the goalie for an extra attacker with two minutes remaining, and needed just 10 seconds to split the deficit in half (2-1). Kate O'Shea applied the redirection in front to get the visitors on the board, with assists going to Kirsten Sullivan and Laura Christie.

Nichols kept the 6-on-5 through the ensuing face-off, but a penalty at the 18:47 mark ended the threat. UNE skated with the advantage for 18 ticks before senior Kierra Wright netted the insurance tally, wristing a loose puck through a crowd into the top-right corner. Shannon Upton and Tatum Gietl were credited with helpers on the goal.

Caty Flagg registered 25 saves for the Nor'easters (6-5-5), while her counterpart for the Bison (7-7), Cassandra Goyette, posted 40 stops.

UNE will wrap up the non-conference portion of its schedule with Bowdoin College on Tuesday (7 p.m.) in Biddeford.
