BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's ice hockey team matched its win total from a year ago with an 8-1 victory over St. Michael's at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday afternoon. The Nor'easters improve to 9-1-1 on the season.
UNE put the game out of reach early as five different players scored in the first period. Julianne Sheehan got things started with a short-handed goal just 2:51 into play. Emily Lanci answered for the Purple Knights with a short-handed score of her own to tie the game 1-1.
Kyra Yu, Marykate Drinkwater, Bella Crugnale, and Shannon Upton all added goals for the Nor'easters as they pulled in front 5-1 after a period and forced a goaltender change by St. Michael's.
Sheehan tallied her second of the game at the 8:01 mark of the second period. Kenady Nevicosi extended the lead to 7-1 just 13 seconds later with her 10th goal of the year. Tatum Gietl added a power-play score in the third.
Shannon Nadeau and Brianna Jewett each had two assists on the day. Meghan Hamilton recorded her first-career point, assisting on Crugnale's goal.
Annie Rademacher made 21 saves in her first appearance of the year for UNE. Vika Simons made five saves and gave up five goals for the Purple Knights over the first 17:03 of the game. Alyssa Cimino add 23 stops over the final two periods.
The eight goals by UNE tied the most in a single game in program history. The Nor'easters skated to an 8-0 win over Salem State on Nov. 29, 2015.
UNE will play its final home game of the calendar year on Tuesday, Dec. 4 against Colby. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
