Hamline Rallies Past Augsburg, 3-2

More news about: Hamline

It was the sort of game that tested the mettle of the Hamline women's hockey team.  17 hours after being held to a 2-2 tie at Augsburg, the Pipers found themselves in a 2-0 hole in the second period Saturday afternoon at TRIA Rink.

Then Leah Schwartzman pushed her consecutive goal scoring to five straight games with a goal in the waning seconds of the period.

In the third, Katie Carlson and Madison Kolbow tallied four minutes apart and the Pipers came off the deck for a 3-2 victory over the Auggies. The decision pushed the current Piper unbeaten streak to nine straight games abd upped the overall record to 12-1-2.  More importantly, it elevated the MIAC mark to 6-1-1, moving Hamline into second place in the loop, just two points behind league leader St. Thomas.

Schwartzman, the reigning MIAC Womem's Hockey Athlete of the Week, started the comeback when  she finished off a three way play with Dani Wright and Bre Simon. The senior then turned passer, feeding Carlson for the tying tally at 8:13 of the third period. Kolbow then nailed the winner on a play with Perry and Siobahn Claugherty.

Jaela O'Brien, who relieved starter McKenna Hulslander in goal 26 minutes into the game, handled all 14 shots sent her way to earn the win. The freshman backstopper has allowed just one goal in 181:33 of play for a goals-against average of 0.33. Ellie Tabaka and Jacie Hoehn scored for the Auggies (7-5-2, 4-3-1 MIAC). Annie Juergens stopped 23 shots in the Auggie net.

The Pipersa head down to the new arena on Friday, January 18 to tangle with St. Olaf. Game time is 7:00 p.m. The teams have a return engagement ar TRIA Rink on Saturday, January 19 at 2:00 p.m.
