Special Teams Lead Hamline over St. Mary's

More news about: Hamline

Those were very special teams the HU women's hockey team had on display Friday night at TRIA Rink. The Pipers scored a pair of power play goals and a shorthander as they extended their school record unbeaten streak to 16 games with a 6-1 decision over St. Mary's.

Hamline, rated No. 5 in the country, improved to 18-1-3 overall and 12-1-2 in MIAC play. With three games to play, they remain in second place in the loop, two points out of first place.

Leah Schwartzman scored twice and Bre Simon, the top pointgetter in D-III, added a goal and three assists for Hamline, which scored twice in every period. At the other end of the ice, Jaela O'Brien recorded 11 saves to improve her won-loss record to 6-0-0.

Schwartzman opened the scoring eight minutes into the game. After SMU tied the game on a goal by Bailey Wendt, Olivia Arkell weaved a shot through traffic for what proved to be the gamewinning tally at 16:29.

The special teams went to work in the middle stanza with Schwartzman finishing off a nifty three way play for a power play goal and Simon forcing a loose pick and feeding Molly Garin for a shorthanded tally.

In the final frame. Jordan Hansen deflected in a Zoey Lobejko point blast and Simon hit an empty netter in the waning seconds to close out the scoring. The Piper defense was solid all night, limiting the Cardinals to just 12 shots on goal.

The two teams will have at it again on Saturday, February 9 in Winona. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
